1-5 Grosvenor Place
Description
Situated in the heart of Belgravia and overlooking Buckingham Palace Gardens. ‘The Peninsula London’ is a new luxury 5 star hotel comprising 190 rooms and 28 apartments. At 507,000 sq ft (48,000m2), the scope included the sub and superstructure RC elements comprised of post tensioned slabs above ground and exposed finishes in the ramp area and certain cores. The project required careful logistical planning to service 41,000m3 of concrete and 5,200t of reinforcement whilst excavating 100,000m3 of soil from the basement. The basement is 5 levels deep and each floor plate covering approximately 6,000m2 was built using a the ‘Top Down’ construction technique. This allowed the bulk excavation and basement construction to progress in tandem with the superstructure. During the project, the Client decided to proceed with the option of extending the basement by another level but without the full programme extension. A second gantry was installed, and we achieved up to 120 loads of excavated material whilst pouring between 400m3 and 600m3 of concrete per day. The 4 cores were slipformed to fast track the relocation of the tower cranes onto them, thus ensuring fit-out of the hotel was watertight and unhindered. After the slipforming, certain core walls were constructed using a jump form to achieve the architectural finishes.
