Bank Station Capacity Upgrade
Description
The Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project delivered a new station entrance and ticket hall, providing step-free access to the Northern Line and DLR platforms, located 35 metres below street level.
Byrne Bros’ scope included the five-level reinforced concrete substructure, comprising a piled escalator box, a deep transfer slab at roof level, multiple deep raft slabs, first-stage concrete works, and the secondary lining to the tunnels.
A critical project requirement was maintaining full station operations throughout construction. To achieve this, we employed an innovative top-down construction method made possible by a bespoke temporary steel truss system. This eliminated the need for plunge columns, which would have clashed with existing tunnels. The truss incorporated a jacking system to manage progressive loading as each substructure slab was cast.
Part of the ground floor slab was designed as a logistics platform, enabling construction vehicles to operate within the site boundary. This, combined with bulk excavation and on-site unloading, significantly reduced congestion on the surrounding busy London streets.
Delivered under London Underground’s Innovative Contractor Engagement procurement framework, the project benefitted from early collaboration with LUL, Dragados, the structural engineer, and demolition and groundwork contractors. This early engagement ensured the structure’s design fully integrated the planned construction techniques, methodologies, and sequences from the outset.
