Terminal 2B Heathrow Airport
Description
Terminal 2B, Phase 2 was part of the £1Bn development of the Eastern Campus for BAA at Heathrow.
It was a challenging airside project, with a 6-month average demand of 4,000m3 of concrete per week. The scope of works involved the construction of 130,000m3 of heavy reinforced concrete basement within a D-Wall perimeter.
Our submission stood out at the tender stage due to our ability to meet the clients own aspirations for aligning the FRC solution with lean construction principals. In particular for reinforcement to be designed for manufacture and assembly.
We maximised Design for Manufacture & Assembly (DFMA) of reinforcement to exceed targets of 77% through collaborative working across our supply chain.
The Client’s programme had been challenged by external events so we worked very closely with the team to identify solutions that not only mitigate, but also create a programme benefit to bring a large volume of the 2012 work forward into 2011.
As part of the T2B project, Byrne Bros set up a dedicated rebar facility, established a team of multi-skilled resources, infrastructure and equipment. Based on these methods and direct transfer of learning from DfMA on site, we delivered approximately 1,100 tonnes of rebar per week into the project.
